When you hire an agency in another country, time zones, communication, contracts and payment all work a little differently. Businesses in the UK, Europe and the US increasingly look beyond their own borders for design and development, and South Africa is one of the places they look. Here's what to know before you hire.

Why businesses hire South African agencies

Time zones that work with Europe

South Africa runs on South African Standard Time (UTC+2) all year, with no daylight saving. That puts it level with, or an hour or two ahead of, the UK and most of Europe, so almost the whole working day overlaps. For the US East Coast, South African afternoons meet American mornings, which is plenty for a daily check-in.

English-first communication

English is the main language of business in South Africa, so briefs, calls and documentation work without translation.

Value for money

For clients paying in pounds, euros or dollars, rand pricing often goes further. That shouldn't mean trading down: judge each agency on its work and its process, not its location.

A mature design and development scene

South African designers and developers work for local and international brands across industries, and Cape Town in particular is known for its creative and startup community.

What to check before you hire

  • The work itself. Look for projects like yours, and check them on your phone as well as your laptop.
  • Who you'll actually work with. Ask who designs and builds your project, and whether you'll talk to them directly.
  • Their process. A clear path from brief to quote to delivery, with a timeline set at the start.
  • Their communication rhythm. How often you'll get updates, and how quickly they reply. You should hear back within a working day.
  • Ownership. You should own the finished work outright, with no licensing fees.
  • Reviews and references. Profiles on platforms like Clutch, and a conversation with a past client, tell you more than a portfolio.

Contracts, currency and payment

Agree these up front, and in writing:

  • Currency. Whether you're quoted in rand or in your own currency, and who carries any exchange-rate movement between the quote and payment.
  • Payment schedule. When each payment falls due, tied to clear milestones.
  • Scope and timeline. What's included, what isn't, and when it ships.
  • Intellectual property. The contract should say the work, the code and the design files are yours once paid.
  • Data protection. If your site or app handles personal data, make sure your agency works in line with your obligations, such as GDPR in the UK and EU. South Africa has its own equivalent, POPIA.

Working well across time zones

  • Protect the overlap. Use shared hours for calls and decisions, and let everything else happen in writing.
  • Write things down. Short written updates beat long calls, and they leave everyone a record.
  • Review in the tools. Comment directly in Figma, on the staging site or on the pull request, so feedback lands in context.
  • Agree a weekly rhythm. A regular check-in keeps everyone aligned without anyone micromanaging.

Questions we get asked

What time zone is South Africa in?

South African Standard Time, UTC+2, all year round. There's no daylight saving, so South Africa is level with, or up to two hours ahead of, the UK and most of Europe.

Is it safe to hire an agency in another country?

Yes, with the same checks you'd make at home: look at their work, speak to a past client, and agree the scope, payment and ownership in writing before you start.

Who owns the work when the project ends?

You should, outright. With us, websites are handed over with no platform lock-in or licensing fees, and app builds end with a walkthrough of the codebase.

How quickly do you reply?

Within 24 hours of your message. Send a brief and you'll have a scope and price within 48 hours.

Do you work with clients outside South Africa?

Yes. We're based in Cape Town and work fully remotely. International clients are welcome.
